A vacancy has arisen in the MODUS development group for a Technical Author. The position would suit a person who has a background in documenting software and can be based in either Castle Donnington or New Mills.

The successful candidate will be a highly-motivated self-starter with responsibility for developing and delivering user documentation for new and existing software applications, including online help systems, printable user manuals, release notes, installation instructions and other supporting materials.


  • Design, develop, test and maintain user assistance materials for metrology software products
  • Develop new user assistance solutions in line with product requirements and authoring developments
  • Collaborate in the development of training materials and web-based information
  • Assist in software and documentation localisation engineering tasks


Key requirements

  • Experienced technical author, familiar with industry-standard authoring tools
  • High level of writing skills
  • Experience in documenting software systems, delivering context-sensitive Help
  • Meticulous attention to detail


Desirable requirements

  • Experience of translation of software and documentation, including building and testing language packs
  • Familiarity with the use of graphics packages for diagrams and screenshots
  • Familiarity with source control systems e.g. TFS, Visual Source Safe

Person specification

The successful applicant will be capable of managing a varied workload covering multiple projects, maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.  They will have the ability to organise technical content logically and consistently to meet the user's needs.  They will possess good interviewing skills for obtaining information from subject matter experts.  They will have an interest in and an awareness of current trends in technical authoring.
