Overview

We are looking for 10 Manufacturing apprentices to join our SEMTA-accredited, award winning scheme, based in Gloucestershire.


The Manufacturing Apprenticeship Scheme


This unique and specialist scheme was created in 2011 as a means of developing future talent and skills for the Manufacturing Services Division (MSD).  The apprentices are based exclusively in MSD, which makes up about half of our business and are concerned with the issues of production and manufacture of Renishaw products, as well as the maintenance of plant and equipment which allow production to run effectively.


Production and manufacturing areas can be challenging, fast-paced and highly demanding, where deadlines must be met and work and products are produced to a high standard.  This pathway will appeal to people who work well under pressure and are flexible enough to deal with the changing demands on production and production techniques.

You will learn core skills (soldering, wiring, assembly) and get to work alongside emerging technologies being developed for modern engineering.


What will I do as a Manufacturing Apprentice?


Starting in September 2018, this is a three-year commitment during which you will learn and develop engineering skills and knowledge through onsite work placements, whilst also studying for nationally recognised qualifications.


Year 1


• You will be based in full time education at Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET), a technical facility based in Gloucester
• You will learn the basic practical and theoretic principles of engineering, studying Performing Engineering Operations at NVQ Level 2, and a Technical Certificate Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technology
• 20% of your time is spent in classrooms learning the principles of engineering, and developing maths and science skills, and 80% of your time is spent in the workshop learning hands-on skills, using machines and applying theory
• Renishaw apprentices are dual skilled, learning both mechanical and electrical/electronic elements
Years 2 and 3
• All apprentices will be required to take 6 month placements in our Machine Shop and Production facilities. Please note there will be a requirement to spend some of this time working a double day shift pattern - alternating each week between a work pattern of 6am to 2pm and 2pm to 10pm
• A further 6 month placement will be undertaken in the Works Engineering department, where you will learn about all the different aspects of maintenance of plant and equipment
• Continued day release each week to GET to study the second year of the Technical Certificate
• Continued study towards the NVQ Level 3, supported by regular review meetings with GET tutors
• Meet regularly with our apprentice team to assess ongoing performance


Year 3


• You will be given the chance to specialize in production, manufacturing or maintenance with a view to gaining more in-depth knowledge and skills
• Study towards a HNC


Post-apprenticeship:


• Continued study towards an HNC, and possibly HND and beyond if the business requires it
• A further 12 months spent honing skills and knowledge in your chosen area, with further career progression being supported for the right candidates


Application and recruitment process


1. Apply online with a covering letter and CV – the deadline for applications is Friday 9th March 2018.
2. Assessment – if you are selected to attend you will spend half a day at Gloucestershire Engineering Training (GET), an off-site training facility.  Your skills in Maths and mechanical aptitude will be assessed. These will be held in February or March 2018.
3. Interview and assessment day– if you are selected you will be invited to attend a full day at Renishaw's New Mills site. You will have an interview, individual practical assessments, and a team exercise and site tour, along with the opportunity to talk to some apprentices currently in the scheme. To be held in April 2018.
4. Offers will be made in May 2018.


Applicants must have:


• At least 5 GCSEs, including the minimum of a B or level 5 in Maths, and Cs (or level 4) or above in four other subjects including Science and English.
• Other relevant subjects such as D&T, Resistant Materials or Engineering would be an advantage. Please note that if you have PEOs or BTECs in Engineering, you may be required to repeat certain modules. Please ensure your CV is up to date with details of qualifications you are currently studying towards, including full titles and levels. You can include predicted grades if you have not completed your studies yet.
• A current or recent job, this does not need to be relevant to engineering and can be a paper round or Saturday job, as this demonstrates maturity, responsibility and independence
• Relevant work experience done through school or college would be beneficial although is not essential
• A relevant hobby, or practical hands-on skills
• Some previous machining experience (turning and lathe work) and/or assembly experience would be beneficial
• Enthusiasm, motivation and a positive attitude, pride in a job well done, and the commitment to put in the time and effort during the apprenticeship in order to reap the benefits when the apprenticeship ends
