    Renishaw’s Encoder Products Division (EPD) designs and supplies cutting-edge position feedback technology to the world’s precision measurement, automation, and manufacturing industries. It is highly likely that something you own contains a part or device that was manufactured with the help of one of Renishaw’s encoder products.


    EPD is made up of engineers, scientists and technicians all working together to produce market leading products for sale around the world. We start with cutting edge optical, algorithm and circuit design, developing our own ASICs and sensors where required; we then use innovative mechanical engineering to turn our core technology into a range of desirable products for our broad customer base. One of the key challenges for EPD is matching the precision requirements of our build processes to the need to build repeatable quality products by the hundreds of thousands. To do this we work closely with the Manufacturing Services Division (MSD) to develop manufacturing and assembly processes and software that perform reliably and repeatedly to accuracies of a few microns. We are constantly looking to embrace innovations in the industry that give us increased quality, repeatability and traceability while reducing product cost.

    A position is available for an Electronic Design Engineer to join a multi-disciplined Current Products team in the Encoder Products Division. The primary focus will be on the design, development and test of Encoder products and process development equipment. There is a strong requirement for effective interaction and mentorship of other Engineers, graduates and apprentices within the group.


    The use of EDA tools and an in-depth knowledge of embedded Electronics is an essential requirement, as is an understanding of the current national & international legislation and directives for compliance. Therefore, a background of successfully designed products and knowledge of current electronic devices and techniques is essential.



    • Developing current products, working with project managers and technical managers to define agreed product specifications and deliver designs to meet those specifications.
    • This can be driven by component obsolescence, quality issues, supplier changes, component shortages, increased production demand and evolving product variants.
    • Work on multiple projects simultaneously and allocate time appropriately, in collaboration with the Project Manager, to meet deadlines for delivery.
    • Work with the Technical lead to optimise the interaction between Electronic, Mechanical and Software components in all designs.
    • Take ownership of the delivery of Electronic designs that meet targets for product performance, quality, cost and timescale.
    • Understand and comply with the company’s new product introduction process, working with cross-functional teams to optimise the release of new designs to Production.
    • In conjunction with the Technical lead, co-ordinate the work of other Electronic engineering resources, providing technical leadership and estimates for delivery schedules.
    • Keep abreast of current technology and develop innovative processes and design solutions


    Key requirements


    • Degree in Electronic Engineering (minimum 2:1) or similar.
    • Able to demonstrate successful Electronic design leadership.
    • Demonstrable expertise in Electronic design including low power and EMC.
    • Knowledge and experience of safety and reliability standards including IEC61508
    • LT SPICE, Ansys, Matlab, Simulink modelling experience.
    • Demonstrable skills and experience with Altium, CR5000 or other ECAD system tools.
    • Practical understanding of microprocessors, software and signal processing techniques.
    • Some knowledge of C, Visual Basic, assembly language or other programming skills


    Desirable requirements


    • Experience of writing software (either PC applications or embedded software)
    • VHDL
    • Competence in mathematical modelling (for example, using Matlab)
    • Enjoy a mixture of hands-on and theoretical tasks.
    • Have a systematic and logical approach to investigations

You will possess excellent attention to detail and be self-motivated to meet deadlines without sacrificing the quality of your work. A creative but methodical approach to development is essential, along with a flair for problem solving, a determination to understand new concepts, meticulous experimental technique and the ability to develop solutions for complex problems from first principles.


    This challenging, cross-disciplinary role will require you to gain a good understanding of many complimentary areas: the science of metrology, optics, software and electronics.  You will be a self-starter in uncertain situations and maintain good record-keeping.  As a reliable, motivated and organised team player, with the ability to work both alone and as team, you will take a logical and innovative approach to solving problems.
