Graduate Mechanical Design Engineers at Renishaw are involved in all aspects of the mechanical design process; taking ideas from concept, through prototype stages and onto manufacture. With the full array of modern design and manufacturing techniques and tools available, you will ensure Renishaw products are innovative and robust; pushing the limits of mechanical and material properties based on sound engineering principles.

Renishaw creates products that are used in the manufacture and control of other products throughout industry and in a wide variety of applications all over the world. You will therefore have to take many factors into consideration when designing our products, such as: temperature; high accuracy and repeatability; manufacturing processes and volumes; and integration with complex control systems. This means the design specification can be uniquely challenging - if our products don't work correctly, our customers' products won't work correctly!

Core knowledge

Graduate Mechanical Engineers will gain understanding of:

  • Mechanical design
    • Structural design, material failure, etc.
    • Stress analysis techniques: hand calculations, FEA, software tools available
    • Thermal stresses/strains
    • Bending and torsional stiffness
  • Process design
    • Mechanism design
    • Materials selection
  • Mathematics
  • Dynamics
    • Vibration, shock, etc.
    • Designing for structural stiffness
  • Thermodynamics
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Manufacturing techniques
    • Metal casting techniques (sand, die, investment)
    • Injection moulding (plastics, metals)
    • Milling & turning
    • Sheet metal forming
  • Design Verification
    • Experimental procedures
    • Mechanical engineering testing equipment
    • Test rig functional design
  • Mechanisms and control
    • Linear systems (linear rails, leadscrews, ballscrews)
    • Transmission and drive systems – belt drives, gear systems
    • Dynamic couplings – rotary and linear
    • Kinematic couplings
    • Spring systems: coil spring and beam spring characteristics

Promotion within the Mechanical stream is likely to follow a technical route to Senior then Principal Design Engineer, or to a position with more managerial responsibilitysuch as Technical or Design Manager.
