  • Overview

Renishaw’s Encoder Products Division (EPD) designs and supplies cutting-edge position feedback technology to the world’s precision measurement, automation, and manufacturing industries. It is highly likely that something you own contains a part or device that was manufactured with the help of one of Renishaw’s encoder products.

EPD is made up of engineers, scientists and technicians all working together to produce market leading products for sale around the world. We start with cutting edge optical, algorithm and circuit design, developing our own ASICs and sensors where required; we then use innovative mechanical engineering to turn our core technology into a range of desirable products for our broad customer base. One of the key challenges for EPD is matching the precision requirements of our build processes to the need to build repeatable quality products by the hundreds of thousands. To do this we work closely with the Manufacturing Services Division (MSD) to develop manufacturing and assembly processes and software that perform reliably and repeatedly to accuracies of a few microns. We are constantly looking to embrace innovations in the industry that give us increased quality, repeatability and traceability while reducing product cost.

We aim to do all of this while maintaining our excellent reputation for quality, delivery and customer service.

    Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of cutting edge metrology products. They will work with multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to take innovative concepts through to volume production. This will involve (but not be limited to) the use of various techniques such as 3D CAD, FEA, data analysis and performance testing.

    • Generate and optimise mechanical design concepts
    • Provide mechanical engineering expertise and take responsibility for key areas of product design within a new product development environment
    • System and component level development and performance testing
    • Data analysis and interpretation
    • Generation of supporting product documentation
    • Contribute to both product and process design
    • Aid in the creation and execution of design verification and validation plans

    • Proven expertise in mechanical design within a precision devices and manufacturing environment
    • Mechanical Engineering degree or similar (minimum 2.1 grade)
    • The ability to work within a 3D CAD package to produce component designs, layout and detailed drawings
    • Appreciation of current manufacturing techniques and technology
    • Familiarity with geometric tolerance definition and understanding
    • Appreciation of the ISO9001 quality standard
    • To extract, write and agree design requirements
    • Ability to produce clear and concise written reports
    • To occasionally deal with customers via email, telephone or visit

    Desirable requirements

    • Skill at time management and balancing multiple projects
    • Experience with design of precision scientific instrumentation
    • Appreciation of optical mechanical assemblies
    • Proven ability to innovate when solving problems
    • Understanding of precision measurement techniques
    • Use of change management systems
    • Knowledge of machining processes both CNC and manual

    Person specification
