  • Overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design and Development Engineer to be part of Renishaw’s growing Machine Tool Products division, located at our New Mills site south of Gloucestershire.

As part of a dedicated team focused on a new product line, you’ll shape and influence many aspects of the delivery of a new machine tool product which is currently in early stages of development.

This is a great opportunity for those seeking a challenge or perhaps embarking a new career in mechanical engineering!

We offer in return diversity in a challenging engineering development environment with professional development, a competitive salary, 9% non-contributory pension, 25 annual leave days paid, life assurance and BUPA Renishaw health trust and much more.

    Responsibilities

This role offers a blend of hands-on and theory as necessary to solve engineering problems, primarily developing a opto-electronic machine tool product.

    Duties include (but not limited to);

    • Gathering design requirements
    • Developing design briefs for equipment, processes and product modifications accounting for vague/broad requirements
    • Producing design improvements in 3D CAD based on facts and evidence gathered, including detail drawings
    • Developing test methods and designing tools and equipment where necessary to conduct testing
    • Prove out mechanical designs against the brief, and consider how fit for purpose the design is
    • Hands-on validation of designs through practical testing followed by reporting and interpretation of outcomes
    • Maintaining a technical file for design work and testing
    • Using analytical skills and tools like FMEA at various stages of the design process
    • Liaising closely with the manufacturing division to ensure good design for manufacture and assembly practice
    • Collaborating with the software and electronics team members

    Key requirements

    • You’ll hold a degree in a mechanical engineering discipline area or demonstrable equivalent experience
    • An aptitude for problem solving
    • Proven experience in designing precision mechanisms and mechanical components
    • A demonstrable understanding of math’s and physics in addition to engineering fundamentals
    • Understanding of manufacturing methods/limitations and design for manufacture
    • An awareness for the product development process from concept to productionisation
    • The ability to:
      • Write quality technical documentation
      • Use 3D CAD to create designs and assemblies
      • Read and produce Engineering Drawings
      • Manipulate and process data in Microsoft Excel to produce statistical results and graphs

The complete product will be an integrated element of the machine tool, therefore beyond mechanical engineering, an appreciation for the electronics, optics and systems elements would be beneficial in solving the mechanical challenges.

    Desirable requirements

    • Hands-on experience with a range of component and assembly manufacturing processes and an appreciation for opto-electronic systems
    • Familiarity with machine tools i.e. how machine tools work and their limitations
    • Experience of precision metrology and Finite Element Analysis
    • Familiarity with Siemens NX and TeamCenter
    • An understanding of system design
    • Experience of using test equipment and good testing methods i.e. use of optical measurement systems, microscopes, manual CMM operation, tensile testing machines
    • Experience and knowledge of the product development lifecycle

    Person specification

You’ll be logical and systematic in your approach to mechanical design with a clear understanding of the quality requirements of tasks undertaken who uses own initiative when solving problems. Being comfortable in suggesting ideas and improvements would be of great benefit to both the role and department. Importantly, this person will recognise when to get tasks done with scientific detail, and when ‘good enough’ is the best for the project.

Opportunities for career developement and training

Introductory training and relevant courses will be available based upon your experience.

    Benefits

When you join Renishaw, we're committing to your future career. That's because we believe in developing our people's skills and promoting them internally. We also offer a benefits package that's highly desirable, including a 9% non-contributory pension, discretionary annual bonus and pay reviews, subsidised onsite restaurant, free parking and sports and leisure societies. Of course, we appreciate there’s more to work than the office, so we also offer 25 days holiday, Life Assurance, Permanent Health Insurance scheme subject to application and BUPA Renishaw Health Trust.
